Frequently Asked Questions
What is the London World War 2 Discussion Group?
The London World War 2 Discussion Group is all about good company, great chats, and a shared love of history. We meet up over a drink or two to swap stories, ask questions, and explore all sorts of topics from World War 2. There's no lectures - just friendly conversation and a chance to learn something new together, whether you’re a total newbie or a lifelong history buff.
How exactly does it work on the night?
We’d love for you to join us! Just drop us a quick WhatsApp message or text on 07349090375 any time and we’ll add you to our friendly WhatsApp group so you can stay in the loop with all the latest updates.
On the evening itself, we’ll post the pub table number in the WhatsApp group before our 7 PM start time — and you can easily spot us by looking out for Paul, our group founder, who’s always rocking his signature Spitfire T‑shirt, so you'll know for sure you've got the right table. From there, just pull up a chair, grab a drink, and settle in for a relaxed evening of conversation and connection. Everyone’s welcome — all you need to bring is your curiosity.
Is there a membership fee to join the group?
The group is completely free and there is no cost involved in coming to the discussion, just come along! The only costs are the drinks or food that you may choose to buy at the pub on the night.
Do I need to have prior knowledge of World War 2 to join the group?
Not at all! You’re welcome whether you’ve been fascinated by World War 2 for years or are simply curious to discover more. Our group is all about sharing stories, ideas, and questions in a friendly, relaxed setting so there's absolutely no need to know anything about World War 2 before you arrive.
Just bring your interest (and maybe your favourite drink) to our table and enjoy the conversation. You might leave having learned something new, met some like‑minded people, and had a really good time along the way.
Do you organise any special events or trips?
Absolutely! A few times a year, we love to step outside our usual setting and explore history where it happened. From fascinating museums to remarkable World War 2 sites, our trips are a great way to bring the past to life together. Every outing is shared in our WhatsApp group — and right here on this website — so you’ll always be in the loop.
How can I join the group?
We’d be very happy to have you join us! You can hop on board any time — just contact us through our website or send a quick WhatsApp message or text to 07349090375.
Once you’re in, you’ll be part of a friendly, relaxed community where new faces are always greeted with a smile. Whether you’re here to share your passion for history or simply enjoy great conversations, there’s always room for one more around the table.
Where and when does the group meet?
We meet on the third Thursday of every month at a cosy Wetherspoons pub right in Victoria Station — the pub is upstairs above the WH Smith shop on the station concourse.
Is the group suitable for younger members or children?
Our gatherings are designed with adults in mind because of the pub setting and the style of our conversations. That said, younger history enthusiasts are welcome to attend if a parent or guardian accompanies them — just note that, due to pub rules, all under‑18s need to head off by 9 PM.
Can I bring a friend along?
Absolutely — the more, the merrier! Friends, family, or curious first‑timers are all welcome to join in. Just give us a quick heads‑up on how many people you’ll be bringing when you first get in touch via WhatsApp or text, so we can make sure there’s space for everyone at the table.
Are the discussions structured or free-flowing?
Our discussions are relaxed, friendly, and full of variety. Conversations tend to flow naturally, giving everyone a chance to share their thoughts, stories, and questions in a welcoming atmosphere.
Sometimes we’ll have a few broad topics in mind to get things started, but we never stick to a strict agenda — the chat can wander, as good conversations often do. That said, we do aim to keep the focus on World War 2 throughout the evening, so there’s a shared thread connecting everyone’s contributions.
Sometimes, a group member may give a short talk on a specific topic, but this only takes up a short amount of time (typically 5 - 10 mins) and is the starting point for a wider discussion.
It’s all about enjoying good company, interesting ideas, and the freedom to explore the subject together at an easy pace.
